Apple Dumplings

  • 6 Tblsp. sugar, divided
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 Tblsp. shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. milk
  • 2 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 3 - 4 medium apples, peeled and sliced

Mix 3 Tblsp. sugar and the cinnamon together and stir into apples.  In a greased 8 x 8 baking dish, cover the bottom of the dish with the apples.  Mix together the sugar and the shortening.  Add the egg, mix well.  Add the dry ingredients alternating with the milk until well mixed.  Pour over the apples and bake at 350 degrees until apples are soft and dumpling is golden brown.

Sauce:

  • 2 Tblsp. butter
  • 2 Tblsp. flour
  • 3/4 c. pure maple syrup
  • 1 c. water

Mix the above ingredients together in saucepan.  Cook until thickened.  Serve warm over the dumplings.
